I still remember the first time I walked into Maria. I was genuinely shocked — I never thought a Thai bathhouse could be this luxurious. Over the past few years, after surviving the pandemic, the place has gone on a wild price-hiking spree. Prices have skyrocketed; the highest now reaches 35,000 THB. Black Caviar sits at 36,000 THB — I wouldn’t be surprised if they deliberately priced themselves just a little higher to stay one step above Maria.

Some Western customers see that a “bath” costs 500 USD and immediately leave a bad review, feeling it’s completely not worth it. But this strategy works: the high prices attract higher-quality girls, which in turn bring in more customers. By creating a clear contrast between high and mid-tier prices, they make it easier for people to settle on the middle range. This exact playbook is what pushed Maria into its current untouchable position. You have to admit, good companies eventually turn themselves into platforms — two-way attraction platforms. In a way, Maria helped usher in a new era for Thai bathhouses.

Most of my clients who go to Maria or Black Caviar end up choosing girls in the 15,000 THB range. Because Chinese customers are the main force, almost all Thai bathhouses now accept WeChat Pay, Alipay, and Visa. For tourists, not having to carry thick stacks of baht is a big convenience.

  • If you’re Malaysian, you can use TNG to scan the shop’s Thai merchant QR code or Alipay merchant QR code (Thai personal codes don’t work, and Thai personal Alipay codes don’t work either).

  • If you’re Singaporean, PayNow can scan Thai merchant QR codes (personal codes don’t work), but you can also transfer to a Thai person’s PromptPay account by asking for the mobile number linked to their PromptPay. Large amounts often trigger risk control, but transfers under 20,000 THB usually go through fine. If you have the OCBC Digital app, you can also scan Thai Alipay merchant codes in Thailand.

  • Taiwanese payment options are more limited. You can only swipe Visa or Mastercard, and shops usually charge a 5–7% fee. If you have a Taiwan Compatriot Permit, you can download Alipay and link your Taiwanese Visa/Mastercard. Without the permit you can still bind a card, but the daily limit is extremely low. Alipay will also charge a fee, but the upside is that some shops that don’t accept cards will still take Alipay.

  • For Hong Kong and Macau, almost everyone already has Alipay, so just use that.

  • Mainland Chinese WeChat Pay and Alipay can only scan Thai merchant codes or Thai Alipay/WeChat merchant codes. Personal transfers are possible only if the Thai person has registered a personal Alipay account.

Maria Overview

Maria puts its main entrance right on the main street. From the front gate you still have to walk several dozen meters to reach the actual building. Compared with Black Caviar’s more distinctive architecture, Maria feels grander and more imposing. The main color theme is gold, and Thai national flags fly at both entrances of the building. The front layout is a bit awkward though — the main door faces a slightly odd direction. My guess is that when they built it, they didn’t manage to buy the plot of land directly facing the main street. That spot is now occupied by a Chaoshan beef hotpot restaurant.

Once you walk in, there are plenty of managers who speak both English and Chinese fluently. Near the main entrance on the first floor there are dining tables, and sometimes a resident singer or band performs. There’s also a dedicated bartender, but very few people actually sit there to eat — after all, most guys come with a very clear purpose.

Maria opened a little earlier than Black Caviar. When it first started, there were barely any customers and only around twenty girls. The number of girls gradually increased later, and during the pandemic the prices became increasingly absurd. We can thank the gray-industry crowd for successfully turning Thai baths into something ordinary people can no longer afford. Then again, maybe this is just the inevitable outcome of this industry.

Inside Maria

Maria maintains a golden lobby, warm lighting, and red carpet style. In my opinion, Maria’s design is much more logical than Black Caviar’s. The girls’ seating areas are clearly divided by price: the 7,000+ THB girls sit together on the left, the 15,000 THB girls on the right, and the 20,000+ THB girls sit outside the rooms. You can compare them at a glance. Different sofa positions and name tags determine the price tier — way better than Black Caviar’s stupid wristband system.

One thing you must watch out for when choosing girls at Maria: some guys think the 7,000+ THB girls already look amazing. That’s because the lighting in that section is specially designed to make them look especially good. You walk in thinking, “Wow, this face for only this price?” Then when the girl is called over, you realize her skin is average or she’s a bit older. What do you do then? Don’t overthink it — just send her back. There’s no need to feel embarrassed or hesitate. If you force yourself to keep her, you’ll still feel ripped off when it’s over. If you hesitate, the girl will also start having thoughts, and it affects her ability to take other customers. This kind of situation exists in other places too, but it doesn’t happen at Black Caviar because there you have to walk around yourself, check wristbands, and look at the menu.

At Maria’s peak, the long sofas would be completely packed with girls — it was quite a spectacular sight. It’s a bit quieter now, but Maria already has absolute top-tier beauty at the 20,000+ THB level — full-on actress-level looks. I personally think some of them are even better than the 30,000 THB girls. Hard to say for sure, because once you get to that price range, looks become very subjective. Everyone has their own type. It could also just be that particular girl happened to match my taste perfectly.

How to Play at Maria

First way (standard):

The process at Maria is quite different from Black Caviar. They also have food available. Before starting, you can order something to eat — either while looking at the girls or inside the private room. Once you’ve chosen a girl, even though the actual service happens in the room, the girls are usually quite attentive beforehand. After you pick her, she’ll naturally take your hand, walk upstairs with you, and help find the room. If you need to use the restroom first, some girls will even get tissues and wait for you outside. I won’t go into more detail here. For tips on choosing girls with good service, best times to go, techniques, etc., check my VIP guide articles.

An introduction to Thai body-massage bathhouses, their concentration in Bangkok, the basic service and how the industry has changed.

Second way (VIP room):

Same problem as Black Caviar — too expensive and low value for money. For example, 90 minutes costs 20,000 THB. If you take a girl into the VIP room, you’ll want at least three hours, which already comes to 40,000 THB. Not worth it. My suggestion is: don’t bother with the VIP room. Do a regular 90-minute session first. If you like the girl, add her privately and arrange to meet outside later.

Remember, the shop takes at least half of what you pay. But don’t resent the shop for it — running a place this big involves huge operating costs, initial investment, and relationship management. Some money is simply meant to be earned by others; otherwise how would you even get to know the girl? Once you’ve added her, you can negotiate privately. For the same 40,000 THB that only gets you two 90-minute sessions inside the shop, you can probably get her for a full day outside.

Whatever you do, don’t be stupid and ask the managers or staff for the girl’s contact information. I’ve seen guys finish in the room, forget to add her, then run out and ask the manager for her number. That’s their cash cow — you’re basically trying to dig up their roots. Either add her inside the room or leave it for another time. Some girls simply won’t give their number, which is normal. The shop trains them not to add customers, and some girls are just timid. If she doesn’t add you, it’s not about you (some guys get way too insecure when a girl refuses to exchange contacts).

The “Tour Guide” Scam

Same scam as at Black Caviar. I won’t repeat it here — go read the previous Black Caviar article for details.

Bangkok’s Twin Titans of Thai Bathhouses: Maria and Black Caviar (Black Caviar Edition)

The two hottest and most famous Thai bathhouses right now are Maria and Black Caviar. These two places completely split the once-crowded Thai bath scene into two clear tiers: Maria

One more thing: these days all kinds of “tour guides,” “Thai drivers working for a friend’s company,” or self-proclaimed “nightlife experts” will try to recommend other Thai bathhouses to you. I’ll be straight: in Bangkok, apart from Maria and Black Caviar, everything else is just “the rest.” I’ll review each of them one by one later. Once you go, you’ll immediately feel the difference. That said, there are definitely some places with better value for money — stay tuned.

As for those black guides who call Tara “Bangkok’s third-largest Thai bathhouse”… the shop itself is fine. I know the owners and I’ll write a dedicated piece on them later. There is a customer base that suits Tara, and I go there myself sometimes. But ranking it as the third-largest is purely because the shop offers higher kickbacks and dual menus, so a lot of black guides use Maria and Black Caviar as bait, then say “Tara is better value,” crown it the third-biggest, and take you there. The worst part? Once you arrive, they rip you off even harder than if you had just gone to Maria or Black Caviar at normal prices — and the extra money doesn’t even go to the shop.

I had one member whose group of four spent 300,000 THB at Tara. Doesn’t that sound ridiculous? He only became my member after that experience. I know some people don’t care about money, but they do care about face. Spending 300,000 THB like that is pure “pay a lot and still lose face.”
