Honestly, many people's impression of Thai women comes from Chinese social media's line that 'when the baht stops, so does the affection.' But that's largely because these bloggers meet women at Nana Plaza, Black Caviar or other clubs and bars. That's also where the famous 'my family's buffalo is sick' joke comes from. Over time, similar stories have increasingly been applied to Vietnam too. Think a little more deeply, though, and you'll realize this is also common back home. Take the recent concert incident: every year seems to produce a few men who bend over backward for a partner. This year, a man bought concert tickets for his girlfriend and her friend. When the camera landed on them, he tried to kiss his girlfriend, only for her to push him away with a look of disgust. Thinking about that, you might even feel men back home have it worse than in Thailand. At least when you pay in Thailand, a woman can offer some emotional warmth and keep the act going while you're spending, right? What I want to say, though, is that with the right approach, it's perfectly normal for a Thai woman to spend money on you too. So keep a few things in mind, rather than reinforcing the idea that Chinese men are all wealthy suckers.

First, understand this: Thai women you meet anywhere—and I mean anywhere, because working in this industry has introduced us to women from all walks of life and all kinds of jobs—will spend money on people they like. That doesn't necessarily mean romantic love. It could be liking a street musician, a hardworking, unassuming cleaner or a funny taxi driver. Some Thai women also spend a great deal in their private lives. In fact, many entered their current 'line of work' precisely because their expenses were so high. Besides dressing up, sending money home or raising children, they may casually spend thousands of baht buying drinks for the next table, share whatever they're drinking and leave generous tips for the manager and staff. Tips of a hundred or two hundred baht at a time are too common to count. How do I know? Because I was sitting across from her, and she paid for the entire evening. She even asked the bar manager about the entry fee and then stuffed the money into my pocket. The reason is that you need to establish what the relationship is when you meet: friends, partners, or friends first. If you're a tourist visiting a venue as a customer, who else would pay if you don't? As for changing how you're seen, I'll share those techniques in my members' group.
Second, you need strong boundaries when dealing with Thai women. More precisely, that applies to women of any nationality. Boundaries are a prerequisite for a healthy relationship: we're independent individuals, and spending time together rests on mutual respect. Take the man at the concert again. After his girlfriend pushed him away when he tried to kiss her, he sat there helplessly, becoming a laughingstock online, and later even appeared in a clarification video with her. What would you do if that happened to you? The best response is to get angry rather than sit there embarrassed and helpless: stand up and leave. When a woman shows you no respect, leave with dignity instead of preserving a surface appearance of harmony. She was the one who spoiled the atmosphere, so what are you afraid of? This idea of being a 'gentleman' is destroying our dignity and boundaries. The same goes for Thai women. One of the biggest issues is constant messaging, anytime and anywhere. This really happens: even before you're a couple, she may bombard you with questions about what you did today, where you went, who you were with, who that woman on Instagram is, and who the woman following you is. These questions are common, so make your boundaries clear from the start. You don't need to answer every question or explain who every woman in your circle is. Simply tell her not to interrogate you: you haven't done anything wrong, and you have a normal social life. This applies in any situation, even with your wife. Some men enjoy it and see it as a sign of love. Fine, but remember not to satisfy someone's urge to pry by behaving like a child who has done something wrong.
